My two cents
So, I know I totally missed the deadline for finishing the book, but I just finished it tonight and really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty interesting, I think SGW is kind of obsessed with death and I think he had someone in his life that was very close to him die and it's been hard for him to recover. I saw Sonny/Frank's death coming though - I wasn't too surprised by it. I was trying to decide what about this book was so intriguing that I finished it in four days? It wasn't earth shattering, it didn't make me look at who I am or how I live my life and strike onto some giant revelation, but something about it draws you in and keeps you engrossed in the story.
I think he does a great job with character development and so you feel really drawn to the people, their lives, their actions, their thoughts, and their interactions with the other characters. Whatever it is, I think he does a good job at keeping my interest in what when I go back and think about it, is really a pretty benign story. I guess that's the sign of a good writer though. Sorry my thoughts are five days late! I saw a case of West Nile Virus today though - so does that help make up for my leniency?
